I received a strange question today. A user was telling me how critical it is that their analytics plugin, Jetpack Stats, works in a specific way with WooCommerce. This got me thinking – wait – why do you need Jetpack Stats? What happens if you ever switch away from WordPress? What if you continue to use WordPress but WordPress.com goes out of business? Am I the only one that worries about these issues?

Why I Love the Happiness Bar
It's the day after WordCamp Atlanta and I'll all pumped up with WordPress energy! I answered a couple extra tickets today, I write some code on the plane, and I'm sitting in a coffee shop right now writing up this post. All of this is because I met amazing people like Mika & Cory Miller and I attended some great presentations. The talks were really great but the best part of this weekend had to be the Happiness Bar.
Persistence is the Key for Large Goals
One of the goals I had when I joined WooThemes nine months ago was to be in the top 10 contributors for WooCommerce. I love contributing to open source projects and I can't think of anything better to work on than our companies flagship product and the most popular e-commerce solution. I'm happy to share that after 268 days I finally made it in the top 10!
WooCommerce Community in San Francisco
One of the things we're trying to do at WooThemes is to engage with the WordPress community. We're definitely planning the yearly WooTrip around a WordCamp, we have incentives to encourage ninjas to attend & speak at WordCamps, and we're even trying to send ninjas to nearby meetups and share the WooThemes & WordPress love. The past couple days I was lucky enough to visit San Francisco, attend a couple meetups, meet local developers, and take in the culture.
WordPress Theme Providers
A fellow WordPresser sent me an email today asking about WordPress Theme Providers and I thought I'd spend a few more minutes on the response and share it here for everyone.
I’ve got a new project and I’m debating about recommending they purchase a responsive theme, or if I should design one myself. I was trying to remember something you said from past meetings. Did you say avoid ThemeForest? If yes, why?
Thoughts on Startup Weekend Green Bay
I just wrapped up my first Startup Weekend. I've wanted to go to one of these events for a couple years now and I never made it a priority. I finally decided it was something I needed to do so I signed up in January as a reward for finishing the Blogging for Benjamin Competition. I met some amazing people and learned some valuable lessons so it was totally worth it. And oh yeah – we also launched a startup and got 2nd place overall. We're called VigorUs. 🙂 Continue Reading…
Practice Your Pitch!
I just got back from the first day of my very first Startup Weekend. If you haven't heard of Startup Weekend before it's an event where developers, designers, and business people get together and launch a startup in 54 hours! So far it's been a pretty crazy experience. I'll go more in depth about the intricacies of the weekend later but I do have one tidbit for any future attendee.
Product Category Permalinks in WooCommerce
Product Category Permalinks in WooCommerce – pfew that's a mouthful. And it sounds so boring and technical. I do occasionally get asked some questions about WooCommerce permalinks and a little understanding of how permalinks work in WooCommerce should explain why we create them that way.
WordPress Themes – What They Should Be
One of the requests we get asked all the time at WooThemes is, “Which theme should I choose?”. I understand why people ask this question but unfortunately it isn't a simple answer. There's a lot of variables and things you have to understand before you pick a theme. The most important of which is what themes shouldn't do…
WooCommerce 2.1 Outdated Templates
I got an email today from a local developer who was asking me some questions about the recent WooCommerce 2.1 update. When she updated she got an error related to her shipping methods. With a quick search she was able to discover our recently created WooCommerce 2.1 Issues page which mentions a fix for that error:
…You can delete that specific file from your theme until this issue has been patched by your theme developer for a temporary fix.
The problem is that in this case she's the developer. She created a custom theme for her client and she has to figure out exactly which template has changed and how to change it back. The question is how? What is a more permanent fix?
